The Challenge
The team at Yappl originally installed broadband at The Black Lion Hotel around a year ago.
Since then, the hotel tried to improve its Wi-Fi by adding four more access points and splitting the connection into four separate networks to reduce traffic. But instead of helping, it made things worse.
When we carried out a site survey, we found the access points were poorly positioned and each one could only reach its own individual network.
This meant staff were struggling to stay connected to tills, PDQs and internal systems, while guests were getting patchy coverage in the bar and bedrooms.
What We Did
To get things running smoothly again, Yappl put in place a full connectivity overhaul:
- We carried out a detailed site survey and worked with Ceri, the hotel owner, to pinpoint key coverage areas.
- Installed a new network of access points placed for maximum coverage throughout the property.
- Set up four secure and fully customisable networks to support the bar, guest rooms, staff systems and more.
- Added firewalls to protect the network from viruses and unwanted traffic.
- Routed all wired devices through a single switch, creating a fully manageable and centralised network.
The Results
A faster, smarter Wi-Fi setup that works for staff and guests alike:
- Yappl can now monitor and manage the network remotely, spotting and fixing issues quickly.
- Guests and staff can move between areas with no drop in signal, thanks to fast roaming between access points.
- Bandwidth controls allow the hotel to prioritise key systems and manage each access point individually.
- The hotel can now offer guest Wi-Fi vouchers with custom time limits – even adding a charge if they want to.
- All four networks can be adapted by the hotel to suit changing needs.
