How to Use Your Phone to Optimise Productivity

Mobile phones have had a seismic impact on society, improving everything from the way we socialise to the way we do business. But despite the fact that our phones have been designed to help us, it can sometimes feel more like they are hindering our productivity rather than helping it.

It was reported that users are spending more than 3 hours a day on their phones. However, much of this time is not being used productively. In fact, more and more of the time we spend on our phones is instead becoming detrimental to our productivity. Reports of Screen Apnoea have grown, a phenomenon in which phone users literally stop breathing whilst using their devices due to the overwhelming stress that their phone causes them to fee

However, all smartphones today have the potential make your life easier, and a few adjustments to the way in which we use them can help to instantly boost productivity levels. So, the team at Yappl have put together a list of useful tips to help optimise your productivity with the help of your phone.

Set up your essential home screen

When you unlock your phone, you don’t want to be immediately overwhelmed by the number of apps that you see. Decide the most important apps for you and leave only these on your home screen, trying to limit it to 2 or 3. Doing this simple exercise will help to focus your concentration when you open your phone.

Turn off unnecessary notifications

While you are at work, the last thing you need to be notified of is a friend reaching a new level on a game. Adjust your notification preferences so that you only receive notifications from your most essential applications.

Listen to Podcasts

Whether it’s industry relevant, or podcasts designed to help you focus, listening to a podcast can be instrumental in increasing your work and motivation levels. Today there is a wealth of podcasts to choose from, so there is sure to be one to suit your preferences and industry.

Delete distracting apps

Delete apps which you don’t use but which just dominate screen space as this could be contributing to the feeling of stress whilst using your device. Not only can they cause stress, but these apps also serve to distract you from work. If you’re not ready to delete the apps in question permanently, consider placing usage limits on the apps you find yourself most commonly using to procrastinate.

Replace these unnecessary apps with ones which have been specifically designed to help you. The Yappl team have also compiled a list of some of the top apps for increasing productivity.

Firefox Focus

This web browser is designed to prevent mindless web browsing, instead encouraging only focussed use of the web on your phone. As the browser keeps no history it will not remember the sites you visit while procrastinating and equally won’t remember passwords or login details.

ToDoist

ToDoist has been labelled the ultimate to do list. The software interprets and categorizes tasks based off the information in each entry to instantly organise your list. Equally useful for teams as it is for individual projects, this app helps you to stay organised and on top of your most important tasks while you work.

Slack

Slack is an incredibly popular app which promotes work collaboration. Many influential brands have confirmed their love of the app including household names such as Target and Capital One. It is essentially a communication app designed to make collaboration as seamless as possible. This modern alternative to email is organised and searchable and allows users to share documents, video chat and integrate with other tools.

CamScanner

Remote and flexible working is growing in popularity thanks to technology advancements and globalisation. The CamScanner app makes working out of the office easier than ever-before by transforming your phone camera into a portable scanner. Not only does the app allow you to send scanned documents from anywhere, to anywhere in the world, but it also enhances image quality. The app can even compute handwritten annotation and convert images to text files in a variety of languages.
